Across the UK local Councils are responsible for bin collections and residents are encouraged to recycle by providing clear guidelines and convenient bin collection services. In Blackburn with Darwen, residents are supplied with different bins for various types of waste:

  • The grey bin is for plastic containers, cans, bottle and jars.
  • The blue bin is for clean, dry cardboard and paper only.
  • The brown bin is for grass, weeds, clippings, plants, branches and animal bedding.
  • The burgundy bin is for food waste, nappies, plastic bags and general waste.

Dumping your rubbish, known as fly-tipping, is illegal in the UK and can result in being fined, or receiving penalties, notices and prosecutions. You can report fly-tipping through the Council website.

You can volunteer your time as a Keep it Tidy Volunteer and you will receive your own litter picking kit for you to get started straight away. Keeping our Towns tidy makes it safer for us, our families, friends and pets, and it makes everyone feel more cheerful & happier.
